Recipe of the Day: Soothing Sleep Salve & Pillow Spray

As you are probably very aware of by now, lavender has a very relaxing and soothing aroma to it. So it is a great aid to use in promoting a restful night sleep. You can rub lavender directly onto the bottom of your feet to help you sleep but I really like these two easy recipes to keep by the bed at night.

Soothing Sleep Salve

Super easy to make and takes less than 2 minutes you will want to keep a jar of this by your bed for at night.

Ingredients:

  • Glass mason jar
  • 1/2 cup semi-soft coconut oil
  • 8 drops doTERRA lavender oil
  • 4 drops doTERRA frankincense oil
  • 3 drops doTERRA eucalyptus oil
  • 2 drops doTERRA cilantro oil

Instructions:

  1. Make sure that your mason jar is clean.
  2. In a small bowl mix coconut oil and doTERRA oils together.
  3. Keep in jar for storage.
  4. For use, apply to bottoms of feet or chest before bed to promote a restful nights sleep.

Lavender Pillow Spray

This is going to be the easiest recipe ever, are you ready for it?

Ingredients:

  • Glass spray bottle (I use an old Perrier bottle and a standard spray nozzle)
  • 2 cups of distilled water
  • 10 drops of doTERRA lavender oil

Instructions:

  1. Fill spray bottle with distilled water.
  2. Add 10 drops of doTERRA lavender oil.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Mist onto pillows and bedding before sleep.

Enjoy and have a good night sleep tonight!

Recipe of the Day: Yoga Mat Spray

My all time favourite lavender recipe is my Bug Bite Itch Relief roller ball, which you may remember I shared the recipe with you a few weeks ago. But there are so many more uses for lavender!

The first recipe I am going to share with you this week is for a yoga mat spray. I found this recipe on the doTERRA blog and admittedly I probably don’t clean my yoga mat as much as I should but I love this recipe and find it also provides a nice relaxing smell. Plus because it has tea tree oil in it, it helps to ensure that your yoga mat stays clean and germ free!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 1/4 cup alcohol free witch hazel
  • 5 drops doTERRA Lavender oil
  • 3 drops doTERRA Tea Tree oil
  • Glass spray bottle (an old Perrier bottle + a stand spray nozzle work great!)

Directions:

  • Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle
  • Shake well to insure they are mixed together
  • Spray onto mat and wipe with a dry towel

Let me know if you like it!

Oil of the Week: Lavender

Starting off this fun new segment of my blog with the oil of the week, this week we will be chatting about lavender. Lavender is a really popular oil, chances are you have used it at some point. Most people associate lavender as a sleep aid but it has so many more purposes which I am really excited for you to learn about this week!

So what is lavender? How do you use it? What are the benefits from it?

What is lavender?

Lavender, also known as lavendula angustifolia, is a flower that grows really attractive purple flowers on it. It grows in really sunny areas and has a very potent scent to it.

Where does it come from?

This video is a great way to see how doTERRA harvests and extracts the lavender oil and where it comes from. Check it out!

What are the benefits of lavender?

Lavender has many uses and has been used for centuries due to its soothing and gentle fragrance. In ancient times lavender was used by the Egyptians and Romans to bathe in, cook with, and as a perfume. Lavender is most commonly used to help calm and soothe emotions and assist in promoting a restful nights sleep, due to its soothing aroma. However there are lots of other uses for lavender. It works as a wonderful insect repellant, and it also helps to sooth the itch of insect bites. Lavender works amazing to help relieve headaches and when combined with peppermint and lemon the oils create a natural antihistamine. Lavender is also great for reducing the appearance of skin blemishes. Overall this oil has so many purposes and provides so many great emotional and soothing benefits, it is one oil you certainly need to keep on hand!

Uses for lavender:

  • Put a couple drops on pillows at night to promote a restful night sleep
  • Rub a couple drops into the bottoms of feet to help promote a restful sleep
  • Rub onto skin irritations to help soothe and reduce redness
  • Take internally to help reduce anxious feelings and thoughts*
  • Use in cooking for great and interesting flavours
  • Combine with peppermint and lemon to create a natural antihistamine
  • Rub into the back of the neck to help ease headaches
  • Diffuse to create a nice relaxing and fresh aroma in your home
  • Put a few drops in your bath to help promote relaxation
