Oil of the Week: Tea Tree

Good-morning! Hope you all enjoyed learning about peppermint last week. This week we are going to look at Melaleuca, commonly referred to as Tea Tree oil. This oil has been one that we always kept in stock in my household my entire life. This oil has so many uses because it is antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, antiviral, and a decongestant!

One of the top things tea tree is known for is repelling lice! I am sure you remember as a kid, or have used tea tree oil on your kids, when lice is going around at school. Lice do not like the smell of tea tree oil, so I always remember my mom putting this in my hair as a kid, and I don’t recall ever having lice!

Another one of my favourite uses for tea tree oil is for blemishes. Just put a drop of it onto any blemishes, and it instantly takes the redness out and helps dry it out!

Okay, so lets take a quick look at what doTERRA lists as some of their top uses for this awesome oil!

So what are some other uses for Tea Tree you ask?

  • For minor skin irritations and blemishes, apply 1 drop of tea tree oil.
  • Add 1-2 drops to your facial cleanser for added cleansing properties.
  • Apply to cuticles and toes to help avoid fungal infections.
  • Multiple cleaning uses.
  • Diffuse with lemon or other citrus smells for an air purifying effect.
  • Mix with clove to help avoid lice.
  • Diffuse to help with respiratory congestion.

What are some of the ways you use tea tree in your home?

Peppermint Recap

Well it was a fun and minty week learning about Peppermint! What did you think of the oil? What were some of your favourite uses? I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

This week, I have one bonus recipe for you that doesn’t really fall into any of our normal categories. But this recipe is much loved by all the dogs in my family – and by their owners. If your dogs are anything like mine, their breath can get pretty stinky. But these treats are easy to make, safe for the pups, and helps to reduce their bad breath!

Bye-Bye Bad Breath Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour (we use coconut flour for our dog as she has allergies)
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3-6 drops doTERRA peppermint oil (depending on the size of the dog)
  • 1 drop doTERRA cinnamon oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mix dry ingredients together in a small mixing bowl.
  3. In a larger mixing bowl, combine together bananas, eggs, peanut butter, and coconut oil. Mix well.
  4. Add essential oils to the wet mixture. If you have a small dog or puppy you will want to use only 3-4 drops of doTERRA peppermint oil, for larger dogs it is safe to use up to 6 drops doTERRA peppermint oil.
  5. Mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture and stir well until combined.
  6. Scoop into balls (depending on the size of the dog) and place on a cookie sheet.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
  8. Makes about 12 cookies, depending on the size of the balls that you make.

Well, thats all for peppermint!

See you tomorrow to talk about another one of my favourite essential oils!
