Can essential oils help you lose weight?

I read that the top New Years resolutions are typically around losing weight, eating healthier, and going to the gym; and to be honest I am not surprised. This is always the busy time of year for fitness facilities! But did you know essential oils can help you with your New Years resolutions? Yep, you heard that right! I’ve got an oil (or ten) to help you with that. So lets explore some oils and doTERRA products to help you with those weight loss goals.

I know we have talked about the Lifelong Vitality Supplements in the past, and we will look at those supplements, and the Slim and Sassy line later. But today we are going to look at some oils you probably already have around your house that can help you!

Lemon

Not only a natural grease fighter, and all around awesome oil – lemon also naturally helps to break down fat cells! Lemon oil will help to  detoxify and eliminate toxins in the body that can get stored in the fat cells, prevent parasites in the intestines, and improve overall digestion. When combined with grapefruit, these two are super powerful natural fat fighters!

Try putting one drop of each lemon and grapefruit in your water each morning to help with weight loss.

Cinnamon Bark

This may be one of my favourite oils to use daily. 1 drop of this in your tea, and it tastes like fall in a cup. SO GOOD. But why is cinnamon good for you, you ask? Well darling, let me tell you. This little oil is amazing for helping to kick start that metabolism. Various studies have also suggested that cinnamon can help to regulate blood glucose levels and the glucose tolerance factor in the body as well.

Not only great for helping to regulate your glucose levels, cinnamon is also great for helping to regulate and reduce cravings! This is because in the oil there is eugenol, which is a component that helps to regulate your neurosensory perceptions, which change how we taste and smell food. Even just inhaling the smell, through diffusing or directly out of the bottle, can help to curb these cravings!

Grapefruit

I am sure we have all heard that many diets include grapefruit in the morning because it is known to help boost your metabolism and help you lose weight. So why should grapefruit essential oil be any different! In fact grapefruit essential oil is often much better, because it is extracted from the rind of the fruit which contains the highest concentration of nootkatone. If you don’t know what nootkatone is (because I didn’t either!) it is a component of the fruit which helps to stimulate activated protein kinase (AMPK), which ultimately stimulates the body to use up sugars and help to reduce the accumulation of fat.

The other important thing to note about grapefruit essential oil is because it is extracted from the rind and not the fruit itself it doesn’t actually interfere with medications, which is often a common concern with this fruit! Try adding a couple drops to your water, or even in your morning smoothie for a nice refreshing taste that will have some great benefits for your metabolism.

Ginger

Ginger as I am sure we have all heard, helps to aid in digestion and weight loss. This is because of its natural anti-inflammatory properties, ginger helps to reduce inflammation which leads to better absorption and digestion of nutrients. Gingerols, a compound found in ginger, has been shown in many studies to reduce inflammation in the intestines, which improves overall absorption of vital nutrients. This has also been shown to help prevent some diseases as well. During weight loss, ginger is a great oil to use because it will help to ensure the vital nutrients and vitamins are being absorbed from your food to help to boost cellular function and energy which supports weight loss.

Ginger is great to take in your water in the morning with lemon, to help ensure that everything is being cleansed and absorbed correctly.

Peppermint

As I am sure we all know peppermint is great for soothing indigestion and upset stomach. And doTERRA peppermint is some strong and powerful stuff (remember: 1 drop is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea!). But did you guys know that menthol, which is found in peppermint is very powerful at helping to control appetite and reduce cravings! Much like cinnamon, menthol helps to regulate your neurosensory perceptions, which change how we taste and smell food. Studies have even shown that just inhaling peppermint (diffusing or directly from the bottle) have helped to drastically reduce cravings and overall daily calorie intake by preventing overeating.

Putting 1-2 drops of peppermint directly into your water before or during a meal will help to prevent overeating, and will also aid in digestion of the food.

Until next time,

Hello 2018!

Well, last night we said goodbye to 2017 and hello to 2018. I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Years! Lets start off this year talking about some oils that will become your go to oils in 2018.

If your New Years started off anything like mine (frozen water pipes and a dead fish – gotta love the Canadian cold weather!) you will probably want some oils to help you to relax and feel grounded to start the year off on the right foot.

My favourite oils to help you relax and feel grounded:

Lavender

I think this is one of my top used oils every night and has been since I was a kid. Some of my favourite ways to use this are to diffuse with cedarwood and vetiver in the bedroom, put a drop on the bottoms of each of my feet, put a couple drops in my bath to help relax muscles, or even sometimes if I am feeling stressed at work to put a drop in my water!

Frankincense

The KING returns. Seriously though this oil does it all. One drop pressed on your finger and pressed to the roof of your mouth for about 30 seconds and you feel instantly more grounded and relaxed. I also put this on the bottoms of my feet during extra tough times to help me feel more grounded and relaxed as well.

Vetiver

Oh how I love my Vetiver. This one I mostly tend to diffuse often at night but sometimes during the day. It has a very earthy tone to it which I love. Note: you will want to get a dropper for your Vetiver bottle or it may stress you out on how long it takes to get out of the bottle! HAHA.

Roman Chamomile

I am not even kidding when I say I inhale this oil daily. Just the smell of it instantly puts my mind at ease. This is my go to oil when I just need to shut my brain down and relax. Diffuse it nightly, use in the bath, take internally. Oh this oil is just sweet pure relaxing bliss.

Bergamot

This is one of my favourite oils because (in case you don’t already know) I LOVE CITRUS oils. But unlike a lot of the other citrus oils, Bergamot has both grounding and uplifting tendencies associated with it. I use bergamot daily in my “pure-fume” blend and find it really is quite grounding. In the evening before bed I will mix this sometimes with lavender and cedarwood too!

Cedarwood

This is again one of the most used oils in our house – seriously I have to hide this one from Daryl sometimes or we could go through a bottle a week! First of all I find not only does this oil blend well with basically anything, its incredibly grounding. This is the one that Daryl always says reminds him of being in nature, which is a naturally calming and grounding feeling for most people. Typically we diffuse this one, but I also do use it in our soap and his beard oil to help ground on a cellular level.

Ylang Ylang

Not just fun to say! This oil has so many amazing uses when it comes to handling stress and relaxing the mind, body and spirit. Sneak a few drops of this in your diffuser tonight and promise you wont be disappointed!

I will be posting a few recipes, diffuser blends, and different ways to use these oils as well as some more information about them over the next few weeks, so if you haven’t got them yet, make sure you get them on your next order. Also on a side note, if you are looking to relax and don’t have Frankincense in your collection yet, placing a 200PV order before the 15th of the month will let you get one for free ($118 retail value!). If you have any questions send me a message!

On the other hand some of us may be looking for some oils to help motivate us to reach those New Years resolutions. If you are looking for those oils stayed tuned for Thursdays post!

Until next time!
